2 PLY MISCELLANY

Many of our past designs have been inspired by the play of light on land, on water, or on objects both natural and man-made. Such effects are elusive and trying to capture them can be rather like trying to catch sunbeams. When designing our Hebridean colour range we sought to create shades that would glow and shimmer, and allow us to reproduce exactly what we saw in our mind’s eye. These past designs show that our quest succeeded. More will be added. Check to see if the original book is needed, or if the design has been republished in a full-colour patterncard.

Elizabeth I

Elizabeth I

The silhouette of this garment was designed to emphasise and enhance the female form - just like the gowns of the Elizabethan era. It has proved quietly popular among women with the figure to carry it off, and several have told me that they got married in it. The colour choice will greatly influence the mood. It looks fresh and breezy shown here in Strabhann. For a regal look worthy of The Virgin Queen, then choose Mara, Red Rattle or Erica. For a light and subtle effect, Driftwood, Spindrift or Fulmar would look particularly good. It is worked straight from the instructions in my book Tudor Roses, which is required to make the garment. Reef Cardigan

Reef Cushion

REEF CARDIGAN & CUSHION

One of my favourite Hebridean villages is Reef (in Gaelic, Riof) in the Uig district of the Isle of Lewis. There is a beach nearby, with striking pale sand and an inviting turquoise sea in which little foam-fringed islets seem to float like whales. If you accept the invitation and enter the sea, then you will exit very quickly indeed unless wearing a wet suit, for the water can literally take your breath away. It amused me to play on the village name and design a child’s garment featuring some bright, exotic tropical fish that would be more at home on a coral reef than in the North Atlantic. They come to life and really glow in Hebridean 2 Ply. Both the cardigan and the cushion are supplied with an amendment for working with the instructions from In The Hebrides, which is required for both projects. AS

Available in Hebridean 2 Ply in colours shown in cushion.

Rosemarkie

ROSEMARKIE

A popular and easy to make project from The Celtic Collection, now available with an amendment for four sizes. The book is not included. This gorgeous colourway uses Driftwood as the main colour, with Sundew, Mountain Hare, Crotal, Red Deer and Clover. You see it here photographed in Glen Affric, in the heart of the Scottish Highlands.

Point Reyes Baby Blanket

POINT REYES BABY BLANKET

This was my very first published design in stranded knitting. I based it on my memories of a childhood journey along Highway 1 in California, and for me it captures all the exuberance of that wonderful coastal road. The luxurious soft feel of Hebridean yarn makes it ideal for use in a baby blanket. This example will grace any child’s room, or use it as a throw in any room that needs a touch of west coast breeziness. I have reworked the design in suitable shoreline shades, which include Mara, Whin, Strabhann, Summertide, Solan Goose, Kittiwake, Spindrift and Sundew. The tension and measurements are different from the original. The book Pacific Coast Highway is needed, and an amendment is supplied with the yarn.

Point Reyes Cushion Cover

POINT REYES CUSHION COVER

This is a beautiful little project for your home, but I also made it a really interesting technical exercise, with several intricate details for those who love stranded knitting. This small cushion cover involves working steeks; knitting up stitches, and working mitred, coloured borders in the round. The book Pacific Coast Highway is needed, and an amendment is supplied with the yarn.

It seemed appropriate to photograph this on the ferry vessel Isle of Lewis, during the 50 mile crossing from Stornoway to Ullapool.
