Story

The aptly named Merveille du Jour enticed me once again into the wonderful world of moths. This beautiful little insect is indeed a marvel to behold. Its curving wings are uniquely patterned in subtle shades of green, contrasting with white and deep hues of purple-black. You may be very lucky to see it feeding on opening flower buds when it first emerges. It quickly becomes a secret beauty, feeding only at night and hiding, usually in a tree bark crevice, during the day.

The colours, patterns and shape of the moth were the starting point for this design for a poncho and matching beret. I shaped the curving hemline of the back, front and side panels of the poncho to echo the curve of the wings, and emphasised this with a two-colour stranded border. These panels are gradually shaped to create a beautifully draped and flattering silhouette. The circular yoke is worked in the round once the panels are made and sewn together. There is much of interest in the construction and it is a great project for an intermediate to expert skill level. Step out in the poncho and matching slouchy beret and you are sure to be regarded as a Wonder of the Day.
