Story

My attention was caught by some star and cross tiles that were made in Kashan in the 13th century, probably for a saint’s tomb: the Imamzadeh Yahya, which is located at Veramin in what is now Iran. The tiles are now scattered in museums across the globe, while the tomb itself is left bare. Some of them are dated and the original religious use is confirmed by quotations from the Koran which are etched around their edges. The decorative technique used is fine lustre painting, which involved an initial glaze and a first firing, after which a design was painted on using a paint based on silver and copper oxides. Firing would reduce the oxides to a sheen of metal left behind on the glaze. I have used a delicate stylised pattern, the result is an elegant stole which captures the quiet serenity of the tiles.
